Setting a standard for secure signal management at the RAF Digby Operation Room

AVworx, a specialist in audiovisual solutions for defence and government projects in the UK, recently installed a secure state-of-the-art multi-classification operations room at RAF Digby.

This ambitious project was grounded in Secure by Design (SbD) principles, with the goal of ensuring robust security whilst significantly enhancing operational efficiency. The new setup includes advanced video and audio systems with signal management powered by Lightware’s MMX2 matrix switcher and Optical Extender, allowing seamless management of multiple security classifications within a single room.

RAF Digby, part of the Royal Air Force needed a sophisticated operations room capable of handling multiple security classifications simultaneously, without compromising stringent security measures. The brief for the project included implementing a secure multi-classification operations room where users can select any input source and display it on a video wall with ease. The system also needed to overcome high ambient light levels.

To meet these objectives, AVworx implemented a sophisticated video wall plus audio with high-fidelity signal management from Lightware.  For data and power security, they adhered to Secure by Design (SBD) principles, following guidelines from the UK's National Cyber Security Centre. All data transmission into or out of the room is conducted over simplex fibre, ensuring secure and unidirectional data flow. Additionally, the electrical power is filtered and protected, mitigating risks and ensuring a secure operational environment.

The video wall and display technology incorporated high-brightness laser projectors, specifically the Epson EB-PU2113W models, which provide 13,000 lumens of brightness to counteract the 700-lux of ambient light at the working plane. Complementing these projectors is a dnp Supernova Infinity Screen, a high-gain screen that enhances image quality and brightness, ensuring clear visibility even in well-lit conditions.

For signal management and transportation, Lightware’s Optical Extender (OPTJ) was chosen to facilitate secure and efficient signal management and transportation over fibre optics. Additionally, Lightware’s Compact Matrix Switcher (MMX2-4x1-H20) allows users to manage multiple input sources before presenting them on the video wall, providing flexibility and ease of use.

The audio system is led by Audac’s KYRA12 design column loudspeakers. complemented by an Audac NOBA8A compact active bass cabinet, to provide robust and clear audio.

“This setup ensures that all personnel in the room can view the content clearly, without light reflections or shadows,” says a Flight Sergeant at RAF Digby. “The projection system offers higher resolution than traditional LED video walls and operates quietly and without generating excess heat, which is critical in today’s operational environments.”

The integration and customisation of these technologies included a user-centric interface designed for ease of use, allowing personnel to efficiently manage input sources and display them on the video wall. Advanced encryption and access control protocols were implemented to safeguard all communications and data transmissions.

The implementation process began with detailed consultations to understand the specific needs and security requirements of RAF Digby. AVworx then created a bespoke design incorporating the latest in secure AV technology. The installation was executed with minimal disruption to daily operations, followed by comprehensive testing to ensure functionality and security. Upon completion, training was provided to RAF Digby personnel, along with ongoing technical support.

Communication and operational efficiency within RAF Digby have been greatly enhanced, with the new system significantly improving the effectiveness of communications. The multi-class capability ensures that sensitive information is protected, meeting the stringent security requirements of the Royal Air Force. The new setup also optimises the use of space by enabling multi-classification operations to take place within a single room, reducing the need for multiple dedicated rooms.

“AVworx's adherence to Secure by Design principles and use of Lightware's adaptable and secure products including the Taurus UCX Matrix switcher, the Fibre Optic extender (OPT-J) and the MMX2 Compact size matrix switch ensured security requirements were met,” confirms the Flight Sergeant. “AVworx’s exceptional support and training made the implementation seamless.”

In conclusion, the successful implementation of the secure multi-classification operations room at RAF Digby showcases AVworx's ability to deliver complex, secure and user-friendly AV solutions tailored to military and defence needs. The ease of use and reliability of Lightware's signal management solutions were critical, helping AVworx set a new standard for AV integration in secure environments.
